Carpet fitters lay new vinyl flooring at a different locations. Every single job is different, it all depends on the size and shape of the room and the type of carpet to be fitted.
At the customers’ house we will :
•remove most of the furniture and sometimes doors to clear for us to work, we prefer the room to be emptied if possible
•get rid of the old carpet and clean the floor we can do this if needed
•make sure that the floor surface is even and, if not, carry out self leveling, we can do this if needed
•install gripper around the edge of the room
•we will; cut the underlay, where required, to the correct shape and fit it inside the gripper
•we will lay the carpet on top, making sure that the pile direction and pattern match correctly
•stretch the carpet, pushing it on to the gripper
•cut the carpet to fit the size of the room.
Most carpet fitters work 39 hours a week Monday to Friday, we work most weekends but there may be early starts and late finishes.
we are Carpet fitters who work mainly in houses or business premises, which are generally clean and well lit. Our job is physically demanding as it involves lots of kneeling, bending and crouching, carrying of heavy materials and moving of furniture.
It may not be a suitable job for people with dust allergies or breathing difficulties.
A carpet fitter should:
•be practical, with good hand-to-eye co-ordination
•have good maths skills to work out measurements and estimates, quantities and costs
•be physically fit, active and reasonably strong
•enjoy working with their hands.
There are opportunities for qualified carpet fitters throughout most of the UK.
Most are self-employed an complete jobs on a contract basis or work on a regular basis for a number of carpet shops.
They may also be employed by department stores, specialist flooring firms, interior designers, etc carpet showrooms and carpet manufacturers.
There are no formal entry requirements, but it may be useful to have qualifications such as UKFA
Training takes place on the job under the supervision of an experienced carpet fitters. It is likely to take two years or more to become fully proficent
Experienced carpet fitters may progress to become responsible for supervising a team of fitters on larger jobs. It is also possible to move into an estimating or planning possision. Many qualified fitters move into self-employment and some eventually set up their own carpet shop or fitting business
