Preparing your bike for winter

Everyone read lots of articles in Internet about the preparation of bikes for winter but the most of them speaks of fancy bikes conservation and advertises some means of care. I won’t tell you of expensive methods of preparation as I just want to list all procedures I do before every winter on my own.

1. Start with thorough washing your bike with shampoo and drying it off. To speed up the drying of covered areas you may ride over the clean road. Also you may take the mud off the covered areas with compressed air.

2. As your bike gets dry than polish it. It is not essential but polish areas are corrosion protected and doesn’t keep the dust. In spring you just rub it with some cloth and your bike would look as brand new one.

3. The chromed areas (especially wheel rims and fork outlets) get easily rusted so you have to grease it at least with thin layer of grease. Before greasing polish these areas removing the old rust. Then spray all the parts with consistent grease to prevent from further rusting.

4. All your bike rubber parts get easily rigid and then crack in frost (and sunshine). So, you have to apply silicon grease to all of them which would help to slow down the cracking (though my experience tells some would crack anyway).

5. To protect your piston from corrosion you have to screw out the ignition plug and pour there 5-10 ml of motor oil with injector then with a kick do couple turns of crankshaft and put the plug back.

6. To prevent the cold air from getting inside the cylinder you have to plug your silencer and air filter.

7. Now, completely fill your tank with gas to prevent it from rusting. You may not use the fuel stabilizing agents for couple of month would do no harm to it. You also may put some alcohol in tank as it would connect the water and gas. Also, turn off the fuel crane just in case.

8. Take the right engine cover off and thoroughly grease the chain to prevent its rollers from rusting to each other. Usually, most of people don’t find a time to grease a chain during the season so, do it at least before the winter.

9. If you have a battery on your bike than charge it fully. The best way is to dismantle it and take home where you would discharge it then charge again and put somewhere till the spring.

10. Apply the silicon grease to all electrical joints and clamps as it would prevent it from acidizing for it is hard to wash a bike without spilling a water on electric parts.

11. You may not change the oil in shift gear as you could do it in spring after the test ride.

12. Now you can put your bike on the stand, decrease the tire pressure to 0.5-1 atmospheres and cover it up.

Seems like that’s it. If I forgot something it would still never prevent your bike from looking the same in spring as in fall.
