Volkswagen BlueMotion. Celestial slow-walkers

Dynamics, ecology and economy are the three basics of modern life. And when you take the first one out you will get Volkswagen vehicles which are branded BlueMotion.

Europeans are more concerned with CO2 emissions that with fuel consumption level because of economic reasons: the less the car emits per kilometer the less taxes you have to pay for it. So, 3 years ago Volkswagen developed its 1st ecological car Polo BlueMotion that was equipped with diesel engine that together with clearing system solved the emissions problems

Different cars with energy saving technologies are produced under BlueMotion brand: Passat, Passat CC, Scirocco, Golf Plus, Touran and Tiguan plus hybrid Touareg and conceptual E-Up! And L1.

We tried 3 of them that are being sold in Europe – Polo, Golf and Passat that fit Euro-5 requirements. Polo has 75 horse powers 1.2 liters diesel. It feels like you are driving GolfIII with TDI engine for it hardly vibrates all the time. Its dynamics is awful for it accelerates to 100 only in 13.6 seconds but it uses only 4.5 liters for 100 km.

Polo same as Golf and Passat got “start-stop” system and “economic” generator which automatically shuts down with increase of engine turns. So this generator generally charges when the accelerator is released or when its needed in set engine regimes. It saves about 0.25 l/100 km. Polo BlueMotion is more economical than Polo 1.6 TDI by 0.9l/100 km in “mixed” cycle. Also “start-stop” system stops the engine when car is stopped and activates it as the driver pushes the clutch so if starting your car you have stopped the engine by accident all you need to do is just to press clutch again which is really useful.

The car is also equipped with Shift indicator – the system of smart indication of next gear transition. If you follow it you would save a lot of fuel but say when riding around the city you would have to shift a lot! It actually proves that the style of driving is a mean of economy itself. So, maybe you would rather have more powerful car, say diesel 1.6 TDI which is as all new Polos equipped with Shift indicator? The difference in fuel consumption is not essential and it would let you speed up unlike BlueMotions that just by their appearance imply the slow and economic riding.

BlueMotions are equipped with only 5 gears transmissions and you would never get DSG even for extra pay (but Golfs would have preselective automat). It might seem strange but it always more profitable to produce vehicles with the shortest list of equipments possible for it simplifies the production process and provides a great economy. Polos’ road clearance is limited by 10 mm and its air dynamics is slightly better than with the standard one. Front lights instead of radiator have plastic plug between them, bumpers, baffles and 5th door have special add-ons and the bottom got additional dashboards.

The prices for “blue” cars in Germany start from almost 17 000 Euros which is not really cheap. So, let’s wait until we start caring about the fresh air more than of price of our car.
